Merle Liivand completed her unprecedented km coastal 20 km mermaid swim in 6 hours 8 minutes 27 seconds in Miami, Florida. She did not use her arms to swim, but relied exclusively on the undulation of her monofin.
The Estonian breaststroker and marathon swimmer, known as Mermaid Merle, rubbed her feet raw with her monofin during her charity swim for Miami Waterkeeper and ARTSail Residency and Research Initiative.
The 20 km mermaid swim took her nearly 2 hours less than her pre-event estimate where she started at South Point Park Pier in Miami Beach, Florida.
