Leticia Flores Hernandez is a veteran Mexican swimmer who combines family travel with her open water swimming schedule.
Beginning in 2010, Flores with her husband Arndt and two children traveled from their home in Mexico City to swims around Manhattan Island and in Wisconsin and Sweden.
That does not count their other trips within Mexico to volcanic lakes in its ruggedly beautiful mountains, meandering rivers through towering canyon walls and the blue ocean waters on its west and east coasts.
After a typical career as a competitive pool swimmer in her youth, the trilingual resident of Mexico found her niche in the open water.
She says, “There’s no black line — there’s so much to look at [in the open water]. It’s something you can’t control. You don’t know what is going to happen.”
