The Catalina Channel Swimming Federation annually offers a free comprehensive course on observer training that includes CPR certification for its solo and relay channel crossings.

CCSF Support Coordinator Paula Selby writes, “There are two sessions: May 11th in the Los Angeles area and June 1st in the San Diego area.

The CCSF offers two opportunities to renew CPR/AED certifications free of charge. Registration is required so that we can provide at each session the correct amount of observer supplies and CPR practice dummies.

Observer training in the morning is followed by CPR certification and a light lunch. We strongly urge every observer, both seasoned veterans and newcomers, to attend one of these sessions.

CPR certification is required of every CCSF Observer.

In addition to the Observer Training, David Clark offers a course on June 8th in La Jolla Shores, north of San Diego, covering the essentials in escorting open water swimmers.

Clark, a member of the CCSF Board of Directors, has been leading this free clinic for kayakers for decades. He explains, “This course is tailored for Catalina Channel attempts with a focus on safety, navigation, and feeding the marathon swimmer in open water.”
