Pete Albers, a co-founder of the Monterey Beach SportsFest together with Terry Bilbro, is a member of the Kelp Krawlers pod.

Fellow member Crystal Perry [shown above with Albers] explains, “We swim 3 times per week with 20-40 people on average for each swim. We probably have 75 people in total. We have no dues, no membership waivers. We just swim and take responsibility for ourselves.

The Kelp Krawlers use 2 separate ocean courses including the longer 2-mile course that starts near Fisherman’s Wharf in Monterey bay. “The water has dropped to 51.3ºF (10.7ºC), but this summer, the water has been much warmer, as warm as 67ºF (19ºC),” says Albers.
