The water temperature at the open water swimming venue at the Pan American Games has been 29°C (84°F) every day for two weeks. In the afternoon, the water temperature has risen to 30.4°C (86.7°F) which is close to the FINA maximum water temperature guideline of 30.4°C.

The race organizers have moved the start times earlier in the mornings in order to avoid the extreme heat of the mid-day.

The committee also agreed to stop the race if the water temperature reaches 31°C (87.8°F). The race officials will check the water temperature every 30 minutes during the race and will make an immediate decision if 31°C is reached. This is in contrast to FINA protocol where the race doctor and Safety Officer determine whether or not a race is to be postponed or cancelled.
