On the first leg of the Rie e Rainha do Mar (King and Queen of the Sea) event, American world champion Chip Peterson came in through the surf together with 2-time Brazilian Olympian Allan Do Carmo and Italy’s Dario Verani.
But he stood up first and was able to give a temporary lead to his teammate Haley Anderson who was quickly followed in the water by the rest of the field including Poliana Okimoto, Betina Lorscheitter, Esmee Vermeulen, Julia Aria, Maria Alejandra Barmont, and Yumi Kida.
The event was won by Italy with Verani and Olympic silver medalist Rachele Bruni.
