If Open Water Finishes Were Covered Like Pool Races

Spread the love

World Aquatics officials on the referee’s boats and finish pontoon always have great views of all the close races at international competitions – where swimmers are swimming shoulder-to-shoulder, pushing themselves to the extreme. They see the swimmers up close, they can hear the sounds of the splashes and kicks, they can sense the excitement as the swimmers sprint to the finish touch pads.

In the pool swimming world, underwater cameras and fixed on-deck cameras that can later replay the finishes in slow motion – really give spectators, TV viewers, and fans a great sense of the tight finishes between sprinting athletes.

In the United States with relatively poor or non-existent television coverage of international competitions, these kinds of close open water races would be very cool – and inspirational – to watch.

Just like the races in the pool…the finish of the women’s 800m freestyle race was a classic. Watch below.
