Ice Swimming World Records, Where Will They Go?

In an emerging sport that is attracting an increasing number of passionate swimmers, accomplished athletes, and well-trained hardened individuals looking to make their mark on the sport, it is highly anticipated and expected that the current batch of world records in the ice swimming world will continue to tumble.
The Ice Kilometer and Ice Mile world records are ratified and maintained by the International Ice Swimming Association (by gender and age group, see below).
“As we do a review of these ice swimming world records, there appears to be some records that have a very good shot at being rewritten over the next few years,” predicts Steven Munatones.
“16-year-old Sven Elfferich of Netherlands (12:31:84) is already well within sight of the 18-24 year age group world record held by Fergil Hesterman (12:38:56). And the 25-year-old Hesterman himself should be able to dip under his own 25-29 year age group world record (12:38:70) as he continues to compete.
Similarly, 26-year-old Ines Hahn herself should be able to break her own 25-29 age group world record (13:34:83) over the next few years, although 21-year-old Hanna Bakuniak is expected to chase down these records over time.
Margot Stenveld, Benjamin Konschak and Petar Stoychev are all on the very young side of their respective age groups. I am sure they will continue to get faster with excellent opportunities to break their own 30-34 and 40-44 age group records of 15:00:51, 13:11:00, and 12:15:87 respectively.
Rory Fitzgerald (14:22:00, shown above) will age up to the 60-64 age group and has a good shot at breaking Ram Barkai‘s current record of 16:58:85.”
With the International Ice Swimming Association Great Britain Championships in Yorkshire coming up (including the 1 km race) and the International Winter Swimming Association World Championships soon after in Estonia, the competition will drive the fastest people to swim faster and faster.
And it may be soon when people over the age of 70 start entering the Ice Kilometers and Ice Miles.
