Romanian Avram Iancu continues on his stage swim of 2,860 km, forecasted to last 60 days, along the Danube River through Europe.
The 41-year-old librarian from Petrosani, Transylvania started his stage swim from Donaueschingen in the Black Forest in Germany. He is now heading into Day 88 – less than 24 km to his finish – as each day is a dynamically different replication of the day before.
Day 86 on September 13th
Today Iancu swam 26 km, reaching the 88 km milestone, stopping 17 km before Tulcea, an important Romanian town. “I am very happy I left behind the 100 km milestone. Today felt slightly easier than the previous last few days, but I am still feeling extremely tired. The wind stopped blowing and the weather was nice – I hope it will stay like this until I reach the end so I can have a nice finish.”
Day 87 on September 14th
After swimming 25 km today, Iancu arrived at the 63 km milestone, at the entrance into the Sulina Channel. Before arriving in Tulcea, the wind started blowing again and the large waves were back but “all the effort was paid back by the warm welcome I had in Tulcea. I absolutely loved this town, I think it’s one of the most beautiful towns on the Danube so far. Seen from the water, it’s definitely more beautiful than Belgrade and Vienna” said Avram. From tomorrow morning it’s a straight line to Sulina.”
A thick blanket of fog engulfed the river this morning, delaying his start by two hours. The police banned him from swimming until the weather cleared up for his own safety and that of his team members.
After the first 6 km, he reached Galati where more fans welcomed him. He held a press conference with the main media channels in Romania. After he started swimming again, he faced a strong headwind and huge waves. At the end of the day, Iancu arrived at the 140 km milestone. He swam for a total of 18 km today.
