How He Does It – Kent Nicholas Daisy Chaining at the SCAR Swim

During the SCAR Swim in Arizona, race director Kent Nicholas and a small band of hard-working volunteers takes over 50 rental kayaks to numerous locations over four days in four different lakes in order to pull off the event.

Nicholas rents most of the escort kayaks and takes them from lake to lake with a large U-Haul truck. But from dock to staging area, the SCAR crew ties the kayaks end-to-end and then pull them by a motor boat.

A kayak daisy chain is an efficient method to simultaneously pull several kayaks in a line, tied together to a primary marine vessel.

With the escort kayaks in place – on time and with paddles and seat cushions – the kayakers jump in and start navigating down the Saguaro Lake, Canyon Lake, Apache Lake, and Roosevelt Lake day by day.
