History In The Making – The Brighton Swimming Club

Although millions of people worldwide are beginning to enjoy open water swimming, the citizens of Brighton on the east coast of England have been doing it since 1860 – coming up on 151 years of history.

The founders of the Brighton Swimming Club started annual open water swims in order to learn to swim and to encourage others.

With the weather and sea conditions permitting, members swim year-round at 7:30am every day, 11:30 am Monday – Saturday, and 10:15am on Sundays with other times during the evenings and summer.

The Brighton Swimming Club has a fascinating history and archives. From raw beginners to some of the best marathon swimmers in history including Michael Read, Brighton Swimming Club has had a great first 150 years of history and looks well-positioned for at least another 150.

Other open water swimming teams, clubs and organizations are posted here, but none have the lengthy history of the Brighton Swimming Club.
