Eagle’s Rebirth: A Lifesaver’s Odyssey to Gold is a 15-minute film about Pantelis Avramidis who became a European and World Masters Lifesaving champion at the age of 82 in October 2022. His story was directed by Dr Stathis Avramidis and produced by the Greek Lifesaving Sports Association.

Eagle’s Rebirth took 11 years to tell the story of a Greek man who refused to be defined by hardship. After a lifetime of struggle, illness, and sacrifice, he became a European and World Masters Lifesaving champion at the age of 82 in October 2022. Pantelis reached higher levels of performance, moved forward faster than expectations, proved stronger than the obstacles that his life placed before him, and ultimately shared his victories with his family.

The story quietly echoes the deeper philosophy of lifesaving sport, that athletic excellence ultimately serves a greater purpose. The film subtly suggests that alongside the Olympic motto of Higher, Faster, Stronger, the spirit of lifesaving adds one more word: Safer.

Eagle’s Rebirth was born in 1941 during World War II when he sacrificed his childhood for survival and family. After enduring poverty, 42 different professions, and overcoming cancer, the long-time runner was invited to compete in lifesaving, a sport he had never pursued.

Denied opportunities and challenged by age, failing eyesight, and numb limbs, Pantelis trained and eventually won three international gold medals in his 80s. At its heart, his story is about dreams, long postponed. The film asks and answers the universal question, “Is it too late to begin again?

Eagle’s Rebirth is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Louis Bonann whose philosophy that failures during our lives pave the road toward destiny, a belief that resonates in the film. Dr Avramidis stated, “Eagle’s Rebirth was made for Pantelis and dedicated to Louis — two amazing fathers who taught their sons that it is never too late for rebirth in whatever the dream may be. The storm always precedes the rainbow.”

The film is endorsed by the International Life Saving Federation, the International Life Saving Federation of Europe, the Mediterranean Lifesaving Confederation, and the International Swimming Hall of Fame. It celebrates courage, resilience, and the power of the human spirit set against the backdrop of the sport that aims to enter the Olympic Games because it saves lives.
