Gregorio Paltrinieri did not win the 2019 FINA World Championships 10 km marathon swim, but he set the pace in the beginning and is setting himself up to complete the Mellouli Double in Tokyo next year.
His sixth place finish qualifies him to compete in the Olympic 10K Marathon Swim at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games 10 km race – that will follow his attempt to defend his Olympic gold medal in the 1500m freestyle.
The Italian is the least experienced of the top 10 qualifiers, but he more than makes up for it with his speed and endurance.
So did lots of top European swimmers. Similar to the Germans and French, the Italian team also qualified two athletes: Gregorio Paltrinieri and Mario Sanzullo in 6th and 9th places respectively.
Paltrinieri made it a race from the beginning. As silver medalist Marc-Antoine Olivier said, “It was really a very difficult race. We have rarely had races like this. [Paltrinieri] put a very hard rhythm from the beginning. I tried to put my tactics in place, but it was really very difficult.
