Over the last decade, Katie Ledecky has won many 1500m freestyle races in the pool where she was the only swimmer in the normal camera angle. – because she was winning by so much. In these cases, the camera crew goes to a wide-angle shot where her competitors are also within the camera frame.
So it was with Moesha Johnson (@swimmer_moesha) in the 10 km race at yesterday’s World Aquatics Open Water Swimming World Cup in Golfo Aranci, Italy. Of the 12 World Cup podium positions she has earned, 10 have been gold.
She opened up a huge 20-second lead on the first lap and extended it to seconds at the finish. She said about wearing a wetsuit as did all the competitors, “A wetsuit race threw a bit of a curveball. I’ve never raced in a wetsuit, so I didn’t know how that would affect me. But I know I’m strong, I’ve been in good form for a while now. I turned around at the third can [buoy] and I thought ‘oh, there’s a gap!’ I had no idea that there was a gap behind me. So from there, I know that once I’m by myself, I’m pretty hard to catch. So I just really tried to save my shoulders in the wetsuit, and save my energy for the end of the race.
I knew the gap was there, but I also know that anything can happen. My coaches were yelling at me on the pontoon saying “save the gas” and I thought, “hell no!” I just know anything can happen and I don’t ever want to take things for granted, no matter how big the lead is. It was only at the end that I kind of turned it off and just wanted to enjoy the win, I’m very happy with it.“

8 swimmers of the 67 starters did not finish.
