At the 2019 WOWSA Ocean Fest, Dan Simonelli accepted a Guinness World Records certificate on behalf of Glauco Luise de Oliveira Rangel who set the fastest record on the 36 km Travessia do Leme ao Pontal course in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil last year.
Simonelli said, “Adherbal de Oliveira, president of the Leme to Pontal Swimming Association congratulates WOWSA, the Guinness Book Records team, and all the sponsors and supporters for the beautiful initiative of bringing together great athletes, professionals, associations and open water lovers from all over the world to Redondo Beach, California.
The Leme to Pontal Swimming Association team is very happy to be represented at the WOWSA Ocean Fest and to be recognized by the
Guinness World Records for Glauco Rangel’s record-setting time of the Leme to Pontal crossing. For sure, this is a special moment and a great honor for us at the Leme to Pontal Swimming Association team and and for lovers of open water swimming in Brazil.
I would like to invite you all to challenge yourself on the 36 km Leme to Pontal Crossing (Travessia do Leme ao Pontal), considered the largest and most beautiful marathon crossing in Brazil, either as a solo swimmer or on a relay, with or without the use of neoprene wear.
Our challenge is 36 kilometers along a coastal course in the city of Rio de Janeiro that is full of natural beauty and adversity including currents, night swimming, wind and waves that will test the limits of all challengers.
Rangel set his record on the Travessia do Leme ao Pontal course on October 9th 2018 in 7 hours 13 minutes.
Rangel said later, ‘I made a mistake in eating – I chose to eat noodles at midnight [before the swim start] that affected my performance. But the Travessia do Leme ao Pontal is a wonderful challenge and it was wonderful to swim at night.'”
