While the early days of the IISA 1st European Championship in Oradea, Romania were dominated by world record swims set in the distance freestyle events (250m, 500m, and 1000m races Andrei Enache, Alisa Fatum, and Andreas Waschburger), the final days of the Championship was highlighted by world records set in the short-axis sprint butterflyers.
28-year-old Filip Kołodziejski from Zielona Góra, Poland [shown above] pulled off a very tight race in the 50m butterfly by 0.03 seconds over Dragos Ghile of Romania, finishing in 27.48 to 27.51. Earlier, Kolodziejski won the 100m freestyle in another close race over Dan Wallace, 55.74 to 56.05.
In the 100m butterfly, 20-year-old Dragos Ghile of Romania set a new world record of 58.91 besting the old record set by Keaton Jones of the USA in 59.36 at the 2023 IISA 5th World Championship. Michal Tomaszowski was second in 1:01.90.
On the women’s side, 29-year-old Ludivine Blanc from France set her second world record in the 50m butterfly after breaking her own 50m freestyle world record earlier in the competition. Blanc’s time of 31.64 beat Karolina Szalast‘s standard of 32.08, set at the 2022 IISA 4th World Championship. 33-year-old Marta Piasecka of Iceland finished second in 32.91.
In the women’s 100m butterfly, Alisa Fatum of Germany ended a busy weekend with a 1:14.15 victory, well ahead of second place 25-year-old Bernard Louise who finished in 1:17.50, well off her existing world record of 1:12.36, set at the 2023 IISA 5th World Championship.

Conclusion of the IISA 1st European Championship
The Championships concluded with 320 swimmers from 27 countries from Albania, Cyprus, Great Britain, Lithuania, Portugal, Turkey, Andorra. Czech Republic. Greece, Luxembourg, Romania, Ukraine, Armenia, Denmark, Hungary, Malta, Russia, Austria, Estonia, Iceland, Moldova, San Marino, Azerbaijan, Faroe Islands, Ireland, Monaco, Serbia, Belarus, Finland, Israel, Montenegro, Slovakia, Belgium, France, Italy, Isle of Man, Netherlands, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Spain, Bulgaria, Germany, Latvia, Norway, Sweden, Croatia, Gibraltar, Liechtenstein, Poland, and Switzerland participating.
The water temperature ranged from 3.9°C to 4.4°C throughout the events that were streamed live on the IISA YouTube TV channel (watch here).
