Are fish overdosing in polluted waterways?
When pharmaceutical drugs are dumped in the world’s waterways, they just do not dissolve. They get picked up by fish according to research reported in the journal Science and reported by author Tomas Brodin in Boston at the American Association for the Advancement of Science gathering.
A Swedish research team showed that perch exposed to concentrations of oxazepam comparable to those found in European and North American waters became more active, less social, and ate more. If all the fish of one species ate more, it could upset the delicate balance in its marine ecosystem.
