First American Open Water Swimming Championships

The first recognized American national open water swimming championships was reportedly held in 1925 from the Chain Bridge to Georgetown in the Potomac River near Washington D.C.

Although other local races such as the La Jolla Rough Water Swim in California and the Boston Light Swim in Massachusetts had started earlier and drew regional attention, the Washington D.C. was an event that attracted top-level competitors from various states in the U.S.A.
