The FINA list of approved swimsuits is now 558 models strong, effective September 6th 2010.

According to FINA Bylaw 8.1, all FINA approved swimwear to be used at the Olympic Games and FINA World Championships must be approved by FINA at least twelve months prior to the start of the competition. In addition, these swimsuits must be available for all competitors by January 1st of the year of the Olympic Games or FINA World Championships (which refers to the biennial events, not the single-discipline World Championships like the Open Water Swimming or Masters Championships).

The 2011 FINA World Championships are scheduled for July 16-31 in Shanghai, China with four specific open water swimming competitions: 5K, 5K Team Pursuit, 10K and 25K.
