Fergil Hesterman Breaks Through In The Ice

Fergil Hesterman of the Netherlands upset heavily favored Bulgarian rival Petar Stoychev in the 1 km Ice Swimming Aqua Sphere German Open 12:38.73 versus 12:39.64 in 3.8°C water and 6°C air in Veitsbronn, Bavaria, Germany.

Marcus Reineke (Germany), Christof Wandratsch (Germany), Alexandre Fuzeau (France) and Stefan Runge (Germany) also qualified for the 1 km finals in Burghausen, Germany.

Hesterman, 17 years younger than the Bulgarian Olympian, dramatically dropped his time from the 2017 Ice Swimming Aqua Sphere World Championships from 13:08.10 to 12:38.73 while Stoychev was off his world record time of 12:15.87.
