Grand Slam in sports can mean different things:
* Grand Slam (Formula One) = driver winning a Grand Prix from pole position, leading every lap of the race, and setting the fastest lap of the race
* Grand Slam (NASCAR) = winning all Sprint Cup Series majors in a calendar year
* Grand slam (baseball) = 4-run home run with all the bases occupied
* Grand Slam of Thoroughbred racing = U.S. Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing plus the Breeders’ Cup Classic
* Grand Slam (golf) = player winning all four major annual tournaments
* Grand Slam (tennis) = player or pair winning all four major annual tournaments
* Explorers Grand Slam or Adventurers Grand Slam = person reaching the North Pole, South Pole, and all Seven Summits
* Grand Slam of Ultrarunning = person finishing 4 annual 100-mile running races in the U.S.

In 2015, Ron Collins, the race director of the Tampa Bay Marathon Swim, first coined the term Grand Slam of Open Water Swimming in the marathon swimming world.

The Grand Slam of Open Water Swimming is a solo completion of the 33.5 km English Channel between England and France, the 32.3 km Catalina Channel in California, the 45.9 km Manhattan Island Marathon Swim or the 20 Bridges Manhattan Swim in New York (the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming) and 37 km Tampa Bay Marathon Swim in Florida.

So far, 26 swimmers have completed the Grand Slam with Australian Penny Palfrey #1 followed by American Marcia Cleveland who chose to swim on New Year’s Day last year.
