In the first Olympic 10K Marathon Swim in Beijing’s manmade Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park in 2008 and in London’s manmade Serpentine, the races for gold, silver and bronze were fantastically exciting.
Mother Nature’s waves, currents, tides and marine life were essentially written out of the equation in the marathon races in Beijing and London.
But that will not be the case in Copacabana Beach at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games where Mother Nature can be a raw and dynamic as can be expected in an ocean-facing shoreline.
In the Aquece Rio – Maratona Aquática test event last week, the athletes received good exposure to what Copacabana can offer in next year’s Olympics. There was a giant X factor – unknown, dynamic, unpredictable conditions – and there will be more of the same next year in 2016.
