Alex Meyer, the world 25K champion from Ithaca, New York, went out relatively easy with his female American teammates, world 5K champion Eva Fabian and national team swimmer Emily Brunemann, in the first 2.5K during the Pirates Week 5K Swim on 7 Mile Beach in the Cayman Islands, but he pulled away on the second half to win comfortably. Seiji Groome finished second in 1:07.13 with Alex McCallum third in 1:09.19.
Meanwhile Emily and Eva went stroke-for-stroke the entire distance to end in a thrilling photo finish. Emily’s time was 59:22.64 to Eva’s 59:22.93. Danielle Boothe of the Cayman Islands finished third in 1:10.42. The very close women’s race is shown on the second half of this video by Open Water Source:
