Devon Clifford was en route to complete a two-way crossing of Lake Tahoe earlier this week – a very rare double crossing – but her escort crew wisely called it a day once she walked upon the northern shore of the high alpine lake between California and Nevada.

“I had to call it at one lap – my crew [including Suzie Dods as observer and Tom Linthicum) as pilot] would not let me continue, nor did I feel capable,” described Clifford on her Facebook page.

“I became violently ill and pushed the last ~6 or 8 hours of my first length crossing projectile vomiting and not keeping any food or liquids down. I was looking forward to the flip turn, but I’ll save it for another day. [I was] happy that I pushed through to complete my single length, 21.3 miles (34.4 km) in white cap chop, nearly hitting a passing storm, and burned throat, in 16 hours 5 minutes.”
