Déjà vu: Jordan Wilimovsky Qualifies For a Second Chance

Jordan Wilimovsky was the only non-European in the top 10 at the 2020 Olympic 10K qualification race at the 2019 FINA World Championships 10 km marathon swim in Gwangju, South Korea.  Surrounded throughout the race by two Germans, two French, two Italians, a Hungarian and a Spaniard, the American from Malibu, California and his coach Dave Kelsheimer had to breathe a sign of relief when he finished fifth overall.

His placing qualifies him to compete again at the Olympic Games 10 km race – after his 2016 Olympic debut – and he looks good to also qualify for the 1500m freestyle on the pool side of the equation.

With the 1500m freestyle (expected) and the 10 km marathon swim (guaranteed), the Southern Californian will experience déjà vu in Tokyo.

At the 2016 Rio Olympics, Wilimovsky placed fourth in the 1500m and fifth in the marathon swim in Copacabana Beach.

Similar to the rough-and-tumble finish in Rio, the race in Korea was similarly aggressive.  Chief FINA Referee Bill Ford issued 7 yellow cards for impeding. As silver medalist Marc-Antoine Olivier said, “People fight for an [Olympic] spot.”
