The International Ice Swimming Association 3rd World Championship and 1st Ice Swimming Arctic Cup 2019 opens today in Murmansk, Russia and continues through March 18th.
Athletes from the world over are confirming their documents and the 500m and Ice Kilometer swimmers are allowed to do a 100m maximum acclimatization swim (or 5 minutes).
A press conference and an ICE Conference will be held where Dr Sean Gottschalk gave a presentation on Recovery in Ice Swimming.
Richard Broer described how to establish International Ice Swimming Association National and Country Associations, explaining what is required of a country in terms of incorporation in order to participate in future world championships and Winter Olympic Games. His presentation was followed by presentations by the chairpeople from the IISA Gr, eat Britain, IISA Germany, IISA France, IISA Ireland, IISA Morocco and IISA Poland.
The inaugural Ice Swimming Hall of Fame Class of 2019 were recognized. They include Honor Swimmer and Honor Contributor – Administrator Ram Barkai of South Africa, Honor Event Bering Strait Relay, Honor Swimmer Aleksander Brylin of Russia, Honor Swimmer Henri Kaarma of Estonia, Honor Swimmer Jaimie Monahan of the USA, Honor Swimmer Lewis Pugh of Great Britain, Honor Contributor – Administrator Mariia Yrjö-Koskinen of Finland, and Honor Contributor – Media Steven Muñatones of the USA.
The International Ice Swimming Association held its Board of Directors meeting with Ram Barkai (South Africa), Pádraig Mallon (Ireland), Jonty Warneken (Great Britain), Richard Broer (Netherlands), Henri Kaarma (Estonia), Jaimie Monahan (USA), Kate Steels-Fryatt (Great Britain), and Petar Stoychev (Bulgaria) in attendance.
Watch live streaming of all the races at the world championships where 110 swimmers from 30 countries will participate in the Ice Kilometer and 400 swimmers from 33 countries will participate in races including the 50m, 200m and 500m freestyle, 50m and 100m breaststroke, 50m butterfly, 4x50m freestyle relay, and 4x250m freestyle:
