David Heron has competed in the 5 km and 25 km races at the 2017 FINA World Swimming Championships (finishing 10th in both races) and the 5 km race at the 2015 FINA World Swimming Championships (finishing 6th).
But this July, he will represent the USA for the first time in the 10 km race – where the competition will be toughest and the stakes significantly higher.
The top 10 finishers at the 2019 World Championships will automatically qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. This possibility is a very good reason why he is fully committed to open water swimming after years of focusing on pool racing.
