93 cold water swimmers turn out for Cadiz Heritage Day Swim in Cape Town, South Africa that raised R10,000 for the elderly.
The swimmers raced on either the 2.5K or 5K course in the 10-12◦C Granger Bay.
27-year-old Philip Emslie won the 5K race in 1:05:16, followed by 17-year-old Lisa Cowling in 1:09.19. The 2.5K race was won by Grant McGilvary (32.20) while the first female was Anna-Lena Becker (40:37).
Philip said, “It was fantastic swimming in the bay and looking up to see Table Mountain and the Cape Town stadium. The last kilometer was very cold and my body started to seize up a bit, but overall it was a fantastic swim.”
Lisa was positive about the entire event, “It was cold but enjoyable. It was flat which made the going easy.”
The Cadiz Heritage Day Swim is part of the Cadiz Swim Series, a host of cold water sea swims which celebrate South Africa, promote open water swimming and raise funds for good causes.
Cadiz CEO and world renowned extreme cold water swimmer, Ram Barkai congratulated the swimmers for playing a small part in positively impacting the lives of the elderly at the Neighbourhood Old Age Homes and celebrating the country’s heritage, “It was a great swim, flat water, sun on the back, water temperature was perfect, what a way to celebrate Heritage Day.”
