At the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games, the results of the men’s 1500m freestyle are as follows:
- Brian Goodell, USA 15:02.40
- Bobby Hackett, USA 15:03.91
- Stephen Holland, Australia 15:04.66
- Djan Madruga, Brazil 15:19.84
- Vladimir Salnikov, Soviet Union 15:29.45
- Max Metzker, Australia 15:31.53
- Paul Hartloff, USA 15:32.08
- Zoltán Wladár, Hungary 15:45.97
The life of Goodell as a teenager and UCLA student and his interrupted rivalry with Russian superstar Vladimir Salnikov between the 1976 Montreal Olympics to the 1988 Seoul Olympics was documented in a new film – The Dual We Missed – and shown at the OLY House at the 2024 Paris Olympics yesterday
The story is based on the rivalry between the 17-year-old Goodell won the 1976 1500m freestyle with 16-year-old Salnikov who finished fifth. But Salnikov later went on to win the 1980 Moscow Olympics when the USA boycotted the Games and Goodell did not have the opportunity to defend his Olympic title. At the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, the political winds flipped and Russia boycotted the Games in response. The Russian boycott in 1984 robbed Salnikov from the opportunity to defend his Olympic title. The documentary film culminates with the unprecedented coaching by Salnikov’s wife between 1984 and 1988 that propelled the Russian veteran to an unlikely Olympic gold medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics in the 1500m freestyle.
Goodell’s coach Mark Schubert at Mission Viejo Nadadores, Rowdy Gaines, and John Naber loom large throughout the film with recollections that touch the heart of competitive swimmers of that era and subsequent generations.
The documentary film is up for distribution.
Goodell commented on the 1500m freestyle world record setting gold medal performance by Bobby Finke a few days ago, “Once you win an Olympic gold medal like Bobby has, you have this indescribable level of confidence. That allows Bobby to go out and have the confidence that he can hold on for the gold.“
Spoken like a true champion.
