Back in 2009, Bill Welzien, organizer of the annual Swim Around Key West, visited Israel and completed a one-way 10 hour 25 minute crossing of the 21 km (13-mile) Sea of Galilee.

Next month, he will attempt a two-way crossing; this time swimming widthwise under the guidance of renowned Galilee escort pilot Lior Eliyahu.

I will fly from Key West [Florida] to Tel Aviv [Israel] in order to attempt a two-way crossing of the widest point of the Sea of Galilee. It is said to be 8 miles wide at the widest.”
