Ocean swimmers or their support crews may occasionally experience a shark encounter when they see a shark fin at the water’s surface, but most swimmers and their support crew assume that sharks make their attacks from below.
Channel swimmers like Mike Spalding and Linda Kaiser while swimming the various channels in Hawaii and Charlotte Brynn while swimming in the Catalina Channel know that “down-from-the-depths” approach to be true from their first-hand experiences.
Other marine life also have the apparent capability of attacking open water swimmers from below by the looks of this video by Brendan O’Connor who was on assignment from Science Magazine:
“Crocodiles have incredibly strong tails. Their tails propel them in the water like torpedoes from a submarine. In fact, as you see [above and] here, their tails are so strong that they can propel their entire body out of the water.”
