Andrew Chin and Mandy Uys explain, “This was the fourth leg of nine Swim for Rivers for Life.
Our project’s vision is to raise awareness among children of the plight of South African rivers, one province at a time. We are busy planning for 2018.
We are using swimming to get a strong message across and making a real difference.
We are rolling out Hippo Rollers and water purification to schools in need. For around $250 we can provide a school with clean drinking water for three years plus.”
The athletes swim in a local river and then discuss with students and local adults about the ecology of rivers, what causes them to become degraded, how ordinary citizens can monitor their health, how to reduce water pollution, how to be water wise and, particularly, how to be water safe.
