Germany Alisa Fatum is one of the legends of the ice swimming world.
The 29-year-old Queen of the Ice from Leipzig, Germany proved her mastery of ice swimming by winning 5 events within a full schedule of swimming over the three-day 2024 IISA 1st European Championship in Oradea, Romania.
Backstroke Events
21-year-old Michal Tomaszowski of Poland won the men’s 100m backstroke in 1:05.60 over young 17-year-old Modoran Cosmin‘s 1:07.90. His gold medal performance was one of Poland’s 9 overall gold medals and one of Poland’s 22 overall medals. Fatum won the women’s 100m backstroke title.
In the 50m backstroke, 29-year-old Ludivine Blanc set a new world record of 32.90 while the top two men finished the 50m sprint with the same exact time: both Virgile Deage and Filip Kolodziejski in 29.21.

Fatum’s Championship Schedule
By the end of the Championships, Fatum [shown below with IISA founder Ram Barkai and fellow German world record holder Andreas Waschburger) had performed the following over the busy three-day championship:
- set a new world record of 6:07.32 in the 500m freestyle
- won the 100m backstroke in 1:17.25 after qualifying first in the heats in 1:18.01
- finished 5th in the 4 x 50m mixed freestyle relay
- set a new world record of 12:41.35 in the 1000m freestyle
- finished second in the 100m freestyle in 01:05.31, behind new world record holder Simona Andreea Chiru
- won the 250m freestyle in 3:01.15
- won the 100m butterfly in 1:14.15 after a preliminary heat time of 1:16.86
- finished 5th in the 50m butterfly in 31.30 after a preliminary heat time of 31.72
- finished 3rd in the 4 x 250m country relay freestyle
That was a total of 2,750 meters of fast swimming in water between 3.9°C and 4.4°C. Impressive, very impressive.
320 swimmers from 27 countries including Albania, Cyprus, Great Britain, Lithuania, Portugal, Turkey, Andorra. Czech Republic. Greece, Luxembourg, Romania, Ukraine, Armenia, Denmark, Hungary, Malta, Russia, Austria, Estonia, Iceland, Moldova, San Marino, Azerbaijan, Faroe Islands, Ireland, Monaco, Serbia, Belarus, Finland, Israel, Montenegro, Slovakia, Belgium, France, Italy, Isle of Man, Netherlands, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Spain, Bulgaria, Germany, Latvia, Norway, Sweden, Croatia, Gibraltar, Liechtenstein, Poland, and Switzerland took part.
