Maarten van der Weijden of the Netherlands retired after winning the 2008 Olympic 10K Marathon Swim.

Will Alex Meyer join them?

Only time will tell.

Alex Meyer, a 2012 London Olympian and 2010 FINA world 25 km champion, completed his competitive career at the 62nd Traversée internationale du lac St-Jean, a 32 km professional marathon swim in Roberval, Quebec, Canada and part of the FINA Open Water Swimming Grand Prix circuit.

It was [an] awesome [event]…[it was] everything I imagined, and so special to have Paul Asmuth in my boat and to become a small part of this event’s rich history and tradition. I’ve been thinking about it all nonstop since I left Roberval, and I feel very fulfilled – more than I have in a long time. It was perfect. It was very difficult, emotionally, to say my goodbyes and leave Roberval. I’m sure I’ll be back in some capacity, at some point, and it won’t be the last time I’ll see my open water friends.”

Van der Weijden, Stoychev, and Grimsey eventually found themselves back in open water after their retirements. Will Meyer similarly find himself back in the open water events? Only time will tell.
