A Special Open Water Swim In Seaquarium Beach

Rudsel Maria is a special man and open water swimming coach from Curaçao, an island in the southern Caribbean Sea, off the Venezuelan coast.

The tall charismatic coach formerly focused on pool swimming after he furthered his study in the Netherlands.

Coach Maria is now utilizing his talents and time to guide Special Olympics athletes as he gradually introduces them to open water swimming.

He took swimmers from Curaçao to the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens, Greece in 2011. Last weekend, he organized the first open water swim in the Caribbean region especially and exclusively for Special Olympics athletes.

The race was held in the calm, protected area at Seaquarium Beach in Curaçao. “We practice once a week in the ocean in a safe area within the breakwater. Our race had 3 distances in a loop course: 250 meters, 500 meters and 750 meters with 32 athletes. We have 45 Special Olympics athletes now swimming in the open water.”

Beautiful.
