The Rose Pitonof Swim, a tidal-assisted 17-mile (27.3 km) swim from Manhattan Island to Coney Island in New York, will be held on August 13th.
“This annual event commemorates the historic swim of Rose Pitonof, a world champion swimmer of the early 1900s,” explains race founder Deanne Draeger. “Rose was the first person ever to successfully complete this swim at the young age of 17.
The Swim begins in the East River at East 26th Street near the United Nations Building and proceeds under the Williamsburg, Manhattan, Brooklyn and Verrazano Bridges with stunning views of downtown Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty and the Parachute jump at Coney Island.”

The event is organized by Urban Swim, an organization dedicated to providing people with safe access to clean water. Draeger explains, “We stage open water swim events in urban areas as a means of fostering a relationship between people and water. Our events introduce people to the recreational possibilities of their local waterways, and in so doing, raise their awareness of water quality issues.
Our activities in support of safe access to clean water are not limited to our open water swim events. We are also actively involved in other initiatives including dock sharing, water testing, free kayaking programs, support of other open water swim events, partnerships, and political advocacy.”
