The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (Gendarmerie royale du Canada in French), the national police force of Canada, is recognizable with their uniforms and hats. The London taxis are well-known black four-door saloon cars. Japanese kimonos are recognizable the world over.
As are the iconic Australia surf lifesaver headgear which dates back 70 years. In shocking news from Australia, the red and yellow caps may soon be extinct.
Surf Life Saving Australia asked its members about the future of the cap because of concerns that it is uncool by the younger generations and does not offer sufficient sun protection. The cap may be removed or made optional based on the wishes of clubs.
The cap is definitely one easy way to identify a surf lifesaver when they run into the water to save someone. “A review is just that: a review and the outcomes will be determined by the membership, with final decision made at a national level,” commented a Surf Life Saving NSW spokeswoman.
