A Life Well Lived By International Marathon Swimming Hall of Famer Charlie Gravett

The International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame reported that one of its International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame Honor Contributors, Charlie Gravett of Jersey, passed away on July 6th (born 1943).
IMSHOF Chairperson Ned Denison writes, “Charlie was a big personality, extraordinarily generous with his time, and a leader in the sport for more than 50 years. He’ll be missed by so many.
As a swimmer, Gravett’s six-man 115.86 km relay in 44 hours in 1962 from Anima Bernie in southern Turkey to Kyrinia, Cyprus was included in the the Guinness World Records.
From 1987, he served as an escort pilot for the IMSHOF Honor Organization Jersey Long Distance Swimming Association in the Channel Islands. Courses that Gravett guided included the 66 km Around Jersey and the 26 km Jersey to France crossing.
During these trips, Charlie and all crews acted in a volunteer capacity – with all swim funds used by the Jersey Long Distance Swimming Association to promote open water swimming in Jersey, especially amongst children.
One benefit is that 25 Jersey residents have completed 32 English Channel solo crossings (including two two-way crossings) – very impressive for an island with a population fewer than 100,000 residents.”
