Ella Dyson (21, Great Britain, World Aquatics bio here) and Ava Portello of Rice University went 1-2 in the 5 km race at the 2025 MPSF Open Water Swimming Championships in Long Beach, California.
Then, the duo teamed up with their teammates Ava Hamblett and Mollie McAlorum to win the 2 km relay over Washington State University with Sophie Hay, Tatum Janning, Viven Nett, and Avery Bulkley, and Brigham Young University with Kara Martinson, Melissa Turlea, Victoria Schreiber, and Cher Patrick.
Sunny skies and a great collegiate ambiance greeted the 109 American and international swimmers in the 5 km race and 39 teams in the 2 km relay in Long Beach. It was a nice collegiate touch when the teams – in both the solo and relay events – did their individual school cheers – before entering the water.
Rice coach Seth Huston – who also competed in the 5 km in the age group and masters race – has quite a dynasty going with another team title to the Rice open water swimming history. The Rice women also on the 2024 CSCAA Open Water Swimming National Championship title. He said, “The team stepped up and just had a great day of racing. They know how to compete and have fun doing it.”
The Rice Owls then took an evening stroll on the Belmont Pier, a short distance away from the Marine Stadium venue. This pier area within the Long Beach Breakwater is where the Olympic 10 km open water swim will be held during the LA28 Games – a goal of Dyson.

The event was live streamed on Game On Live Studio with play-by-play by Cejih Yung. In the women’s 5 km race, Dyson won, Portello was second, Hamblett placed fifth, Renne Tan finished seventh, Sami Johnson was 20th, and McAlorum was 28th in the 76-women field.
