Kelley McShane is a 38-year-old American open water swimmer from Westerly, Rhode Island with a creative, curious, and courageous view of her newly found sport.
After swimming in her waters of her native Rhode Island, she started to challenge herself overseas and completed the 6.6 km Bosphorus Cross-Continental Swim in Turkey…and then got a whole lot more curious about challenging her open water talents around the world.
So she created the McShane Intercontinental Swim Series (MISS) and is about to set off on a worldwide journey.
The MISS includes the following 7 intercontinental crossings. She is now on Stage 3, heading to Egypt next week:
1. Silfra Fissure from North American to Europe in Iceland, a total of 0.003 km
2. Bosphorus Strait from Europe to Asia in Istanbul, Turkey, a total of 6 km
3. Suez Canal from Asia to Africa in Egypt, a total between 0.6 – 2.4 km, depending on location
4. Panama Canal from North America to South America in Panama, a total between 0.6 – 3.2 km, depending on location
5. Strait of Gibraltar from Europe to Africa from Spain to Morocco, a total of 14.4 km
6. Bering Strait from North America to Asia from USA to Russia, a total of 4.3 km
7. Timor Sea from Asia to Australia from Indonesia to Australia, a total of 20 km
More to follow as her global journey continues.

The McShane Intercontinental Swim Series reminds me of Lynne Cox‘s Swims Around the World in 80 Days that she accomplished in 1985. Her swims were coducted in the US, Iceland, across the Strait of Gibraltar from Morocco to Spain in 6 hours 10 minutes, across the Strait of Messina in 40 minutes 38 seconds, around Delos Island in Greece, across the Bosphorus in Turkey, across Lake Kuming in China, in the Five Lakes of Mount Fuji in Japan, in Glacier Bay in Alaska, and finishing at the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco Bay, California.
