Daniel Wiffen Off To A Great Start on His Triple Distance in the Pool and in the Seine

The world’s fastest distance freestylers who have entered the both the 800m freestyle and the 1500m freestyle in the pool as well as the 10 km marathon swim in the Seine started their triple race scheduled today at La Défense Arena Pool in the 800m freestyle at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

While Guilherme Costa of Brazil swam to fifth in the 400m freestyle yesterday, he joined Florian Wellbrock of Germany, Daniel Wiffen of Ireland, Gregorio Paltrinieri of Italy, Henrik Christiansen of Norway, Ahmed Jaouadi of Tunisia who also competed in the 800 meters.

Before these men get to the Olympic 10K Marathon Swim to be held in the River Seine on August 9th, they need to get through the 800m and 1500m preliminary heats and finals.

Wiffen looked strong and controlled, qualifying first with Gregorio Paltrinieri of Italy qualifying third. Shockingly, Florian Welbrock of Germany swam a 7:44.59 for 12th place and will not compete for medals in the 800. Neither will the other open water swimmers in the race 13th place Felix Auboeck (Austria) in 7:48.49, 17th place Mykhalio Romanchuk (Ukraine) in 7:49.75, 20th place Guilherme Costa (Brazil) in 7:54.41, and 25th place Henrik Christiansen (Norway) in 8:00.55.

2024 Olympic 10K Marathon Swim Male Finalists on August 9th

The Race

33 men from 24 countries will compete in the 10 km marathon swim on August 9th starting at the Pont Alexandre III bridge where the course will be 6 loops of 1.67 km around a 10 km rectangular course in the Seine.
