The 27th 5.2 km Traversée Dakar – Gorée in Dakar, Senegal will be held today on September 28th.

The race goes from Thiaroye to La Voile d’Or where swimmers from Senegal, Nigeria, Mali, Gambia and America participate.

Île de Gorée is a small island located 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) at sea from Dakar.

Dakar is located on the Cap-Vert Peninsula on the Atlantic coast on the western edge of Africa. Gorée is famous as a destination for people interested in the Atlantic slave trade and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

While the 2014 African Swimming Championships were postponed due to concerns related to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, the African Swimming Confederation (Confederation Africaine de Natation) decision to postpone the event did not impact the 27th Traversée Dakar – Gorée open water swim.
