The Czech National Open Water Swimming Championships was especially exciting this year with the participation of all of the country’s top swimmers. The national titles were gained by Olympians Jana Pechanová, Rostislav Vitek as well as Silvie Rybarova and Jan Posmourny.
But the Championships were held under changing conditions: it was hot (35°C) on Friday, colder (18°C) on Saturday morning and even colder (10°C) in the afternoon due to cold and strong winds causing whitecaps.
Jana (shown above), one of the world’s elite open water swimmers, won the 5K race and the 10K (held in July) this year in the largest reservoir (a hydroelectric power dam) Lipno in the Czech Republic. The silver medal was captured by Silva Rybarova (9th at the Shanghai world championships in the 25K) who just came back from World University Games in China. Bronze went to Bara Pickova who will represent the Czech Republic in the European Open Water Swimming Championships in Eilat, Israel next week.
In men’s 5K race there were close battle between Jan Posmourny and Rostislav Vitek until the finish chute. Jan won his the first national open water title.
During the second day of the championships, the 20K marathon event was held. Silva and Rostislav, the oldest man at the 2011 world championships in Shanghai (35 years), has been the national champion since 1998. Throughout his reign, he won his 8th Czech Cup series championship that comprised of more than 20 races every year.
