The S.C.A.R. Swim Challenge swimmers are off on their longest leg, 17 miles (27.3 km) along the ruggedly beautiful Apache Lake in Arizona.
If the winds pick up, and whistle in the opposite direction of the swimmers, it is going to be a long day as the lake narrows at time and serves as a wind tunnel.
One of the most remote swims in the United States, the course begins at the eastern end of the lake at the buoy line below Roosevelt Dam and continues to the Horse Mesa Dam.
The swimmers will traverse between the Mazatzal Mountains and Superstition Mountains on Day 3 of the 4-day S.C.A.R. Swim Challenge, a stage swim in the Saguaro Lake, Canyon Lake, Apache Lake, and Roosevelt Lake organized by Kent Nicholas.
