Klinke, Motobu, Pipes, Sakovich Honored In Hawaii

Carl Kawauchi announced the Class of 2018 in the Hawaii Swimming Hall of Fame.

At the Hawaii Swimming Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Banquet on September 8th, 15 swimmers, divers, water safety, coaches, and contributors were honored including:

* Ulrich Klinke who completed the first ratified 11.2 km channel swim across the Alalakeiki Channel between the islands of Kahoolawe and Maui. He most recently finished 150th overall in the 2.3-mile Keawe Adventures North Shore Challenge from Ehukai Beach Park to Waimea Bay on Oahu at the age of 73.

* Alton Motobu [shown above] who has completed 34 Waikiki Roughwater Swims, the first 12.1 km crossing of the Alalakeiki Channel from Kahoolawe to Maui in 1992, a 14.2 km crossing of the Maui Channel in 1995 from Lanai to Maui, a 15 km crossing of the Kalohi Channel in 1995 from Lanai and Molokai, a 13.7 km crossing of the Palilolo Channel in 1998 from Maui to Molokai, a 14.2 crossing of the Maui Channel in 2003 from Lanai to Maui, finished 29th in the 7 km Hawaii Christmas Looong Distance Invitation Rough-H2O Swim in 2017 at the age of 66.

* Karlyn Pipes, a 2007 International Masters Swimming Hall of Fame Honor Swimmer, a 2015 International Swimming Hall of Fame Honor Masters Swimmer, received the 2016 ISHOF Buck Dawson Authors Award, set 200+ FINA masters swimming world records, is a 5-time World Masters Swimmer of the Year.

* Bill Sakovich who has coached in Hilo, Indonesia, Morocco, Honolulu, Micronesia, was 2002 Coach of the Year in Saipan, inducted in Northern Marianas Sports Hall of Fame in 2003, and was voted Father of Swimming in Micronesia in 2018.
