Will Smith Goes Searching for the California Coast – and Finally Finds It on a Dark, Foggy, Cold Crossing of Catalina

Spread the love

Tim Denyer traveled with other Red Top swimmers (@redtopperformance) to Southern California last year for successful Catalina Channel crossings, but this year was different.

Very different.

This week, the coastline remains shrouded in a dense fog as Will Smith battled a strong eastward current that pushed him well off the beaten path of Catalina Channel swimmers. At one time when dawn had long passed and Smith had swum for hours in the dense fog, he said, “How on Earth did anyone ever find this continent?

Denyer added, “And it was damn cold at night. The easterly current added about 4 hours to his swim.”

But the 37-year-old from London eventually crossed the 32.3 km channel in 15 hours 45 minutes.

Smith was escorted by captain Dave Harvey.

Next up for Coach Denyer is 43-year-old Chris Cook.
