Everyone has a story, captivating stories that can inspire many.
Lovely stories, touching stories, thought-provoking and action-packed stories.
I wish I had many more hours in the day to tell these stories and share them with others in the growing global open water swimming community. I have been doing so since 1978, writing over 21,000 articles on races, solo crossing, charity events, relays, coaches, pilots, event organizers, kayakers, medical personnel, and volunteers.
But for every article that I write, I would love to be able to write hundreds more. From every country, of every age group, about all distances, in all conditions, the stories of people who venture beyond the shorelines around the world are inspirational and remarkable.
What men and women have been doing over the last 150 years in the open water and more recently in the 21st century have been unprecedented and mind-boggling.
From the fastest swimmers to the slowest, and everyone in between; from the youngest to the oldest and everyone in between; from those who overcome disabilities and life’s many unexpected challenges, there are so many more stories to share.
The number of stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things is vast – and those stories need to be told.
Swimmers have different goals. Many times, those goals are achieved, but sometimes, those goals go unfulfilled…on one swim or many, for a season and sometimes for many years.
The lives of swimmers – without question – are fascinating. What drives swimmers to train on a daily basis, to acclimate to extreme conditions, to improve their speed and their strength, to overcome their weaknesses and limitation (both perceived, self-imposed, or actual), what drives them to seek new goals or go after older ones not yet fulfilled, these are the backgrounds that should be told.
But my time is limited as are my talents. One solution is for swimmers to write their own stories and share them on the Daily News of Open Water Swimming and create or expand their bios on Openwaterpedia.
You know best what drives you. You know best what – and who – motivates you. You know best who you wish to inspire and what legacies you wish to leave behind.
