The crowds in Singapore will be treated to tremendous races at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships that will kick off in on Monday, July 10th – or so indicated the event schedule.

But due to poor water quality in Sentosa Island that exceeded the World Aquatics standards, the only race on Day One of the open water swimming calendar – the women’s 10 km race – was postponed 24 hours and will take place tomorrow after the men’s 10 km race.

The men and women wearing the white shirts as race officials had to make their first major on-the-spot decision of the WA Championships.

Over the course of the championships, the white shirts from World Aquatics – dedicated open water swimming volunteers from around the world – will take on various functions while rotating in the following roles and responsibilities during the 3 km Knockout Sprints, 5 km, 6 km Mixed Relay, and 10 km events:

  • Starter
  • VRS Judge
  • Feeding Pontoon Supervisor
  • Safety Delegate
  • Chief Finish Judge
  • Recorder
  • Clerk of Course
  • Chief Timekeeper and Timekeepers
  • Chief Referee, Referees, and Assistant Referees
  • Start, FInish and Turn Judges
  • LOC Medical Officer

This delay can play on the mindset of the inexperienced open water swimmer,” observed Steven Munatones. “But for the open water veterans, they understand, can accept, and then reset themselves when the unexpected occurs in open water competitions. The veterans know that, simply put, things happen that are out of their control, but they can remain calm and composed, and will be ready tomorrow.”
