Kara Robertson envisions…and delivers.
Robertson dreamed of an open water swim in the desert of Nevada. She researched what is required, she inquired what swimmers wanted and then she set about delivering big-time. Caravans of adult swimmers from the neighboring states head to Las Vegas not for the casinos, clubs, restaurants and shows, but for the Slam the Dam event.
“The enthusiasm masters swimmers used to have for a weekend in Vegas in their youth is now replaced by a deep passion for Kara’s swim,” said Steven Munatones of the Daily News of Open Water Swimming. “She has really delivered on her vision and organized a great event.”
The highly popular Grand Slam race held in an oasis of the American southwest desert is already sold out, but there remain a few spots remaining for the 8km, 2.4mi, 1.2mi and Super Slam races.
The races are held in the majestic Lake Mead. This year, all the defending champions from 2011 are returning to take on newcomers from 20 American states as well as swimmers from as far away as Japan and Germany.
A majority of the volunteers recruited by Robertson are from Nellis Air Force Base and Creech Air Force Base. Because of their overwhelming support as kayakers, timers, onshore support and safety personnel, the Slam the Dam is offering a 40% discount for all military personnel (qualified swimmers use Code:USAYES on the registration site).
And true to the spirit of Las Vegas, entertainment and laughs never seem to stop. El-fish with his fashionable garb and sweet moves will bring his non-stop colorful commentary to the show, an onshore blast of contagious enthusiasm that brings fun-filled attention to swimmers of all abilities and backgrounds.
