Author John Steinbeck could have been writing about the experiences of modern-day open water swimmers when he wrote his non-fiction book about a marine-collecting expedition called The Log From the Sea of Cortez in 1951.

Paul Lundgren, Diana Nyad, Penny Palfrey and a great number of open water swimmers from Australia to Florida when he wrote, “An ocean without its unnamed monsters would be like a completely dreamless sleep.”

Paul’s goal this summer is a 76-miles solo attempt across the Sea of Cortez where he will swim non-stop for two nights, possibly facing monsters – like the box jellyfish – that are no bigger than his palm of his hand, but whose venom strikes fear for those who have dared get in its way.
